Who runs the world? Girls. Here’s 10 Tips I’ve Learned for Women in Business

Going into 2018, my goal is simple: to become my best self. If I had a dollar for every time I doubted myself, I would be a millionaire by now. But unfortunately self-doubt doesn’t pay the bills. If anything, it hinders your ability to succeed in anything. So I've needed to shake it off and up my game, especially in the world of business. To help me along the way, I’ve picked up

some great new reads that have left me pumped for the year ahead: Little Black Book: A Toolkit For Working Women, The Working Woman’s Handbook and How to be an Overnight Success – written by the boss babe behind beauty brands Rodial and Nip+Fab. It’s time to take notes, ladies…

There’s no such thing as overnight success

It’s really just overnight exposure. Rodial was started back in 1999, so it took Maria 18 years to become ‘an overnight success’. It just goes to show that things aren’t always as they seem. Ever heard of the 10,000-hour rule? It’s the number of hours of practice it takes to become a pro at something. That’s eight hours a day, five days a week, for almost five years. HOLY COW. We have to realise that success takes time, hard work and patience. It’s not just one ‘like’ away.

Be original

In the words of Oprah at this year’s Golden Globes, ‘speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have.’ It’s a nod to embracing your originality and staying true to yourself. So whilst I could keep comparing myself to others, I’m gunna let ‘you, do you’ and instead find inspiration in other places, so that I can be the definitive, rather than the reiterated. Nobody wants a copy.

Get comfortable tooting your own horn

It’s self-promotion at it’s finest, something I really struggle with and I’m sure I’m not the only one. It feels so uncomfortable and to be completely honest, rather unnatural. But confidence is the key. You must believe in yourself or no one else will.

Dream big, but have a plan

You may not be living your dream life just yet, but if you plan for the jobs you want, you will get there. Raise your value, by creating value. Make sure everything that you are doing right now, is going to help get you to where you want to be. Think of it as perfecting your own box of magic tricks. So that when the time is right, you will have your ‘abra-cadabra’ moment, wow-ing your dream client into working with you. Remember, hard work always pays off.

Have a little perspective

Sometimes we can take ourselves way too seriously. Guilty. I can so easily lose myself in my work, or life, that when things go wrong, it can seem like the end of the world. What should we do instead? We should give a sh*t, but not too much. If it’s not life or death, it can wait ‘til tomorrow. Put down your phone or laptop and enjoy your life.

It’s all about the journey

It’s a saying that we hear a lot, but can we really have it all? The answer can be yes, but not at first. Picture your perfect life. Got it. Now focus on one or two elements of your life at a time and if you stay consistent, one day you will get there.

Don’t be too hard on yourself

Remember that Fergie song…‘To be with myself and center. Clarity, Peace, Serenity’ as it played out an episode of The Hills, with L.C. looking out over Laguna Beach? There’s no best way, no right way to success, just a choice given the information you have at the time. So find a way to enjoy today, as today is all we have.

Get out of your comfort zone

Was anyone else obsessed with The Sims back in the day? Those were the good old days. But do you ever remember giving your Sims free will to do whatever they wanted? Mine would either just sit and watch TV all day or burn the house down with their god-awful cooking. We’re just the same, given the chance we’ll become complacent. So face your fears, whether that’s fear of failure, rejection or not being good enough. Don’t be afraid of things going wrong, cos in the beginning everything that’s likely to go wrong, will go wrong! Take the learning, and move on.

Anyone can do it

Make time for yourself

You know the saying, ‘We are what we eat.’ Well it’s true in business, and life too. We are a reflection of our lifestyle, our passions and our happiness. So there’s no such thing as ‘no time’ when it comes to yourself – your happiness radiates from you to your clients. So if you look your best, you’ll feel your best and so will your business and clients too.

If it's day-to-day productivity you struggle with, then I wrote a post on that too - 6 Ways to be More Productive and Get Sh*t Done, so head over there now for that daily motivation that'll leave you kicking some serious ass and taking a hell of a lot of names. You're welcome.
